SYNOPSIS

It was whilst wearing the Czech butcher’s cap I’d bought in Prague on the streets of Marseille that I discovered it symbolised, for the Senegalese, the struggle for independence in Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau and its pan-African leader Amilcar Cabral.

Intrigued by the dual significance of my little cap, I set out to investigate its origins.

BIOFILMOGRAPHY

After completing a Master’s degree in urban planning at the Sorbonne in Paris, Violette Deffontaines studied documentary filmmaking at the Film and TV School in FAMU high school, Prague. During her time there, she directed two student films, Après coup and Des coquilles. Based in Paris, Violette works on various creative projects across Paris, Marseille and Prague: she explores the potential of audiovisual tools as collaborative means of understanding places through the eyes of their inhabitants.

In 2018, she joined forces with other urban planners to co-found the Quartiers Ludiques association, which promotes educational and playful tools designed to shape the city and teach people about this process. At the same time, Violette is developing her own creative documentary projects, such as My little knit cap.
